Setups & Spaces Avatar

I love the site -- in fact, I've been looking at Lifehacker's Feature Workspace column for some time now. Just curious as to how you go about selecting the workspaces on your site? Can anyone submit them or do you know these people personally?

Thanks again, and I hope to see some more great setups!

Hey Jason, thanks very much for the question. Prior to starting up SetupsandSpaces.com, like you, I also spent a lot of time on sites like Lifehacker’s “Featured Workspaces”, their “Show and Tell” Pool on Flickr, Pat Dryburgh’s “Simple Desks” and Shawn Blanc’s “Sweet Mac Setups”, among others.

It is sites like those which served as my inspiration for Setups & Spaces. I just took the opportunity to extend the concept of a “setup profile” a bit further, seeking answers to questions I had, but weren’t always asked on the sites I mentioned.

Since I am very early in the process of both developing the site and it’s content, the method I have used to select workspaces for the site has been a somewhat tedious one. Basically I have spent a great deal of time, over the course of many weeks, reviewing the various groups on Flickr which focus on desks and workspaces. From there I selected the desks I really liked and reached out to the individual(s) behind that setup and asked if they wanted to participate. Obviously this was a challenge initially, as I was asking them to dedicate some of their time to be part of a project that was no more than an idea, with nothing tangible to show them. But to my surprise I did have a fair number of positive responses, at least enough to stockpile a months worth of content, and get the site off the ground. Now, with a little over a dozen setups in the queue, I have enough content to fulfill my planned “every other day” posting schedule.

That being said, I really do hope the popularity of the site will result in people who visit deciding to volunteer to be featured. After all, the plan for Setups & Spaces is to give people proud of their workspaces a place to showcase them, all while giving some insight into what went into creating them. I don’t have a submission feature up on SetupsandSpaces.com at the moment, but the plan is to add one to the page before long. In the meantime, if anyone reading this answer would like to be featured on S&S just send a short email to FValletutti@me.com indicating interest along with at least one picture of the space you would like to profile. If I think it will make for an interesting feature I will reply back with the questionnaire, and away we go. I hope I answer your questioned, and if you have any others feel free to ask. Thanks for reading Jason!
