7 Notes

Haku

1.) What is your name and where in the WWW (Whole Wide World) do you live?

Haku: My initials are Y.M., but you can call me Haku (ハク), and I live in Tokyo Japan.

2.) What do you do for a living, what pays the bills? And what is the thing you do when you are not doing the thing that pays the bills?

Haku: I am a College Student in my fourth year majoring in International Relations. When I am not in the process of job hunting I mostly spend my time reading books/Manga, drawing illustrations, playing games and surfing the net. An occasional visit to Akihabara is also refreshing.

3.) How much of what you do, personally or professionally, gets done at the work space featured?

Haku: Mostly everything since this is the only desk in my current apartment. That being so I have to be extra careful not to spill food all over my monitors.

4.) Typically, what time of the day do you normally find yourself at this desk, and for how long? Night owl, early bird?

Haku: I’m basically a night owl and spend most of the night here. This is practically the only place to rest other than my Shiki Futon, no kidding. The PC is turned on for about 8 to 10 hours a day.

5.) How much of what gets done at your desk is for work, how much is it to scratch your own creative itch?

Haku: Depends on the season but I would say probably around 50% work, 50% creative.

6.) What are the essentials that can be found on your desk more times than not? How about those items just out of reach or out of sight? If it’s not on top of your desk what are the things you most often grab out of a top draw or cabinet?

Haku: The Apple Wireless Keyboard (JIS), Kensington Expert Mouse, a Wacom Bamboo tablet, and iPhone are necessities I simply cannot do without. The triple monitors and the speakers connected to my Acer desktop consumes quite a bit of space, and preventing clutter proves to be a daily hassle. For that reason most of my PC gadgets are hidden under the table. Makes dusting a lot easier too. The cabinet under the table stores many of the items needed for work starting with stationary, a ruler, spare ink, keys, bills, a tissue box, electronic dictionary and the like. On top of it is my HP Netbook that I seldom use.

7.) What beverage/food/snack can one usually find at your desk, and why?

Haku: I keep teas (Green, Darjeeling) and a couple of Wagashi on the desk for refreshment.

8.) Do you have any reasoning or anecdotes that lend some insight into why your desk is setup the way it is, or the thinking behind certain item(s)?  How about the things around your desks? Decoration, wall art, figurines, statues, etc? Any particular reason behind those?

Haku: I’ve always been quite conscious of the way the workstation was setup, but after seeing several posts on Flickr focusing on people’s workplace I was embarrassed by the way my place looked and decided to go through a lot of re-organizing. Some of the features you see here were inspired from such posts. As for the things around my desk;

The Moe figurines which I collect for a hobby consists of…..

Yes….it is quite a lot when listed, and took me ages to find a place to display them all.

The picture on the wall is just some item I picked up in an art fair in Florida years ago. It says, “In Bloom” by Neil R. Brown.

9.) How much of what you do, or aspire to do, influences your desk setup, tangibly and intangibly.

Haku: Sorry for the disappointment but I’m not into programming or any other complicated computer engineering. I simply thought that since most of my entertainment (internet browsing, TV, YouTube, blogging, and illustration) is computer based, making some investment in my setup would allow me to spend my time more efficiently. For example, while drawing an illustration on one monitor I could keep an eye on my email, reference materials, and watch television on the other.

10.) Are you a Mac or are you a PC? What machine(s) are setup and used at your desk? If you are a little bit of both tell us why. How about any other tech gear that can be found at your desk or in your home?

Haku: My main machine with the triple-monitor runs on Windows Vista with a CoreDuo Quad 6700 Memory with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD. I also have a Netbook, a HP Mini 1000.

11.) What’s the one piece of gear you could not live without?

Haku: That would undoubtedly be the iPhone 3GS. Updates on my blog, figurine review, and mailing are all managed with this device.

12.) What piece of gear cannot be found on your desk, but you wish it could be?

Haku: A Mac Pro, MacBook Air, or any Mac computer for that matter.

13.) Software; what do you use more often than not. What helps you get the job done? And what do you not use, but hope one day to incorporate in your workflow?

Haku: As for internet browsers I use Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari for Windows. Other than that there is iTunes, DELETER, CGillust 4.5 PLUS, Picasa, pcasttv for 地デジ, Craving Explorer, Snipping tool, and Microsoft Word.

14.) If you could change one thing about your desk, or the room it is currently in, what would that be?

Haku: If space allowed, I would probably get a normal wooden desk. A glass desk is nice, it allows me to see the stuff stored under the table, but not practical. It’s cold when you lay a hand on it and it attracts plenty of smudges that are visible to the human eye.

15.) Workspace Breakdown;
Think of as many things as possible that comprise the setup of your office or workspace, anything from the paint on the walls to the floor mat your chair rolls on, and list them out. Who makes your desk, how about the cabinet next to your desk, your lamp, the overhead light fixture? Anything and everything you can see in the pictures shown, give as much color and background on these items as time and memory permits.

Haku:

Computer Setup -

Most of these items were purchased in Yodobashi Camera (a Japanese version of a Radio Shack, only bigger).

Furniture & Miscellaneous -

The two stores I frequently use to buy furniture are IKEA and Mujirushi Ryhouhin(無印良品).
