Guillermo Avalos
1.) What is your name and where in the WWW (Whole Wide World) do you live?
Guillermo: My name is Guillermo Avalos and I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
2.) What do you do for a living, what pays the bills? And what is the thing you do when you are not doing the thing that pays the bills?
Guillermo: I run Kits Design Studio (KDS), a web design studio. When I am not doing that I am usually hitting the gym, enjoying a movie or taking a nap.
3.) How much of what you do, personally or professionally, gets done at the work space featured?
Guillermo:
Home; Not much. This is my home setup, and as such, little work gets done here. I usually hang out checking emails, reading and organizing my personal life.
Office; Pretty much everything. This is the studio setup, so all my work gets done here.
4.) Typically, what time of the day do you normally find yourself at this desk, and for how long? Night owl, early bird?
Guillermo:
Home; I usually use this setup during the nights and over the weekends.
Office; During the morning and in the afternoon you can find me here. Regular business hours I suppose.
5.) How much of what gets done at your desk is for work, how much is it to scratch your own creative itch?
Guillermo:
Home; Personal stuff most of the time. Some of my own projects are done here as well.
Office; 100% work stuff. Although being a designer also means that when creativity hits you it doesn’t matter where you are, and sometimes I end up doing some personal stuff here too.
6.) What are the essentials that can be found on your desk more times than not? How about those items just out of reach or out of sight? If it’s not on top of your desk what are the things you most often grab out of a top draw or cabinet?
Guillermo: Aside from my MacBook Pro, my cell phone and a notepad. I keep my iPod and cellphone chargers as well as some other office supplies that I don’t need all the time, such as staplers and so on just out of reach.
7.) What beverage/food/snack can one usually find at your desk, and why?
Guillermo: Coffee! Lots of coffee. I’m a big coffee drinker, lattes being my favorite.
8.) Do you have any reasoning or anecdotes that lend some insight into why your desk is setup the way it is, or the thinking behind certain item(s)? How about the things around your desks? Decoration, wall art, figurines, statues, etc? Any particular reason behind those?
Guillermo: I used to have a really, really cluttered workspace just a few years ago. At some point, I guess I felt the need to clear the clutter, in both my desk and my personal lifestyle. During the past few years I’ve been searching for the ultimate simplicity, to keep only the essentials and make the most out of what I have. I don’t keep a lot of decoration. At home, you won’t find any. I do have a Dwight Schrute bobble-head at the office though ;)
9.) How much of what you do, or aspire to do, influences your desk setup, tangibly and intangibly.
Guillermo: Quiet a bit. I have a very uncluttered lifestyle, and that is reflected on both my work and my workspace.
10.) Are you a Mac or are you a PC? What machine(s) are setup and used at your desk? If you are a little bit of both tell us why. How about any other tech gear that can be found at your desk or in your home?
Guillermo: 100% Mac. I use a 15” MacBook Pro, which is connected to a 20” Apple Cinema display when I am at the office. As for other tech; not a lot. My cell and a digital camera maybe. I try to minimize on gadgets, carry as little as I can, and make the most out of them.
11.) What’s the one piece of gear you could not live without?
Guillermo: My MacBook Pro.
12.) What piece of gear cannot be found on your desk, but you wish it could be?
Guillermo: An iPhone. I gave my 1st gen iPhone to my sister and got a Nokia E71, since it had everything I needed (GPS, multitasking, 3G and so on). Over the years the iPhone caught up with it, so I’ll be getting a new one as soon as the 4th Gen hits the stores.
13.) Software; what do you use more often than not. What helps you get the job done? And what do you not use, but hope one day to incorporate in your workflow?
Guillermo: Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS3, as well as the built-in OS X apps (Mail, iCal). I also use iWork quite a bit, and Coda and Transmit from Panic. Those are my essential tools.
14.) If you could change one thing about your desk, or the room it is currently in, what would that be?
Guillermo:
Home; The lighting. I’m planning on changing my desk lamp for something more elegant.
Office; Maybe adding some decoration, a small plant might look good.
15.) Workspace Breakdown;
Think of as many things as possible that comprise the setup of your office or workspace, anything from the paint on the walls to the floor mat your chair rolls on, and list them out. Who makes your desk, how about the cabinet next to your desk, your lamp, the overhead light fixture? Anything and everything you can see in the pictures shown, give as much color and background on these items as time and memory permits.
Guillermo:
