Jonathan Bucko

1.) What is your name and where in the WWW (Whole Wide World) do you live?

Jonathan:  My name is Jonathan Bucko, and right now I am living in Bitburg, Germany. I plan on moving back to the states in a few months time.

2.) What do you do for a living, what pays the bills? And what is the thing you do when you are not doing the thing that pays the bills?

Jonathan: I work in the Weapons division in the United States Air Force, but I don’t have much time left there. I plan on getting out and going to school in order to pursue a BA in Fine Arts. Being in the military doesn’t really give me much free time. Lets just say if we were getting paid overtime a lot more people would be signing up for the military. With what little time I do get, I like to spend it with my lovely wife. Otherwise I am always on my iMac, either playing games or on Photoshop and Aperture.

3.) How much of what you do, personally or professionally, gets done at the work space featured?

Jonathan: Other than school work, and me having fun, nothing really.

4.) Typically, what time of the day do you normally find yourself at this desk, and for how long? Night owl, early bird?

Jonathan: It really depends on what shift my work has me on. If I am on nights, you’ll find me here in the morning, and if I am on days then the reverse is true and I am on it at night. They are always swapping me around like a rag-doll.

5.) How much of what gets done at your desk is for work, how much is it to scratch your own creative itch?

Jonathan: All of it is for my creative itch, there is not much I can do here that will help me with loading bombs onto an A-10. Not to mention that the whole Air Force is Windows based.

6.) What are the essentials that can be found on your desk more times than not? How about those items just out of reach or out of sight? If it’s not on top of your desk what are the things you most often grab out of a top draw or cabinet?

Jonathan: My iPhone and iPod are always close by. I also like to take my Nook around with me when my wife is not using it. I have Tupperware drawers on the side of my desk that I keep all my cables, CDs, DVDs, etc… in. Blank DVDs can also be found stacked behind my iMac.

7.) What beverage/food/snack can one usually find at your desk, and why?

Jonathan: I try not to have any food at my desk, but you can sometimes catch me eating cereal or ice cream.

8.) Do you have any reasoning or anecdotes that lend some insight into why your desk is setup the way it is, or the thinking behind certain item(s)?  How about the things around your desks? Decoration, wall art, figurines, statues, etc? Any particular reason behind those?

Jonathan: Not really I like to keep my desk as simple as possible.

9.) How much of what you do, or aspire to do, influences your desk setup, tangibly and intangibly.

Jonathan: My desk setup is all ways changing. M wife seems to always be leaving her work and school papers on it and I do a pretty good job of buying gadgets and random stuff that finds it way into my setup at one point or another.

10.) Are you a Mac or are you a PC? What machine(s) are setup and used at your desk? If you are a little bit of both tell us why. How about any other tech gear that can be found at your desk or in your home?

Jonathan: I am Mac all the way. I do not have a single computer in my house that runs Windows. I have no problem spending a little extra money for a nice computer. You get what you pay for as they say. Not to mention I also kinda have a slight addiction to all things Apple/Mac.

11.) What’s the one piece of gear you could not live without?

Jonathan: Probably my iPod touch, I love to play my ten pages worth of games. Or my Nook. I love having all those books at my finger tips.

12.) What piece of gear cannot be found on your desk, but you wish it could be?

Jonathan: I would like to get a Mac Pro or the Apple Cinema Display. Being in the military I don’t make that much money so I guess I will just have to save my money up. I would love to have the dual monitor setup, as it would be so nice to have and absolutely make multitasking that much easier.

13.) Software; what do you use more often than not. What helps you get the job done? And what do you not use, but hope one day to incorporate in your workflow?

Jonathan: I use Photoshop, Aperture, and whatever else I can get my hands on.

14.) If you could change one thing about your desk, or the room it is currently in, what would that be?

Jonathan: I would move my whole setup out of a German house and put it in an American one. The Germans build nice houses, and have the best windows ever (I love the Rolladens), but they have no clue where to put the power outlets, and never have enough. They are all located in only one position in the living room. I have countless surge protectors around the house just so can I plug in all of my electronics.

15.) Workspace Breakdown;

Think of as many things as possible that comprise the setup of your office or workspace, anything from the paint color on the walls to the floor mat your chair rolls on, and list them out. Who makes your desk, how about the cabinet next to your desk, your lamp, the overhead light fixture? Anything and everything you can see in the pictures shown, give as much color and background on these items as time and memory permits.

Jonathan:

  • My desk
is a 60 dollar desk that I bought from the BX. I plan on getting a better one when I move back to the States. The top of the desk is really nice but the rest of it is a pile of crap.
  • iMac: 2.93 Ghz, 4 GB of RAM and a 640 GB Hard Drive
. I believe paid the list price for this iMac which was somewhere in the neighborhood of 1700. It was worth ever penny. I only wish that I spent more money and got the one with the better video card.
  • MacBook Pro: 2.16 Ghz, 2 GB of RAM and a 500 GB Hard Drive. I bought this MacBook back in 2007 also for around $1700. It has gone through a lot and still continues to amaze me. I don’t know if I am ever going to to need to replace it. It runs like the day I bought it and with the HD upgrade I performed it has become more useful. I even saw a speed increase when I moved from the old HD. I am OCD when it comes to HDs and free space. I have to have at least 150 GB free at all times and it has to be organized just so. I hate clutter (on my computer at least, my house is a different story, here is plenty of clutter there because I don’t really care about my house, just my electronics). If I don’t use something on a regular basis, and that something is over 500 MB, I will burn and archive it to a DVD. I have a ton of DVDs with all kinds of stuff on them mostly pictures and movies.
  • Klipsch ProMedia 2.0: The greatest computer speakers I have ever heard. I bought these at a Best Buy on a trip home last October. I paid $150 for them and would have paid more since they are a such a steal. The Sub is 130 Watts and the Satellites are 35 Watts a piece, more than enough power for computer speakers. The funny thing is that instead of mailing them back to Germany I took them through the airport as one of my checked bags. I just kept them in the original box and they were safe and sound. These are by far one of my favorite things on my desk.
  • Wacom Bamboo board: Although I don’t use it as much as wish I did. It was well worth the $60 it cost me.
